Maine Township Information

The Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation (MCYAF) was started in 2002 in response to results of a drug and alcohol survey that revealed a concerning level of drug and alcohol use among Maine Township High School youth. Then High School Superintendent Dr. Steven Snider invited community members representing government, schools, parents, youth, business, and faith communities to work together to combat alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among Maine Township youth. The survey data provided caring citizens with information to mobilize and work to affect a positive change. MCYAF now operates as a separate, non-profit entity in partnership with schools and other organizations.

MCYAF serves students from Elementary School Districts 62, 63, and 64 and High School District 207. All students who attend schools in these districts are served, regardless of whether they reside within the boundaries of Maine Township.

Maine Township

Maine Township is a suburban township located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 135,623 at the 2000 census. The township was founded in 1850.

Maine Township is located directly north and east of O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Maine Township contains portions of the Chicago suburbs of Park Ridge, Morton Grove, Niles, Glenview, Des Plaines and Rosemont.

Population Trends in Maine Community

Number of foreign born residents is 39,143 (51% naturalized citizens). School reports indicate that as many as 51 different languages are spoken in the homes of our school children. Cultural diversity is both a blessing and a challenge in our community.

The most common places of birth for the foreign-born residents: Poland (20%), Mexico (15%), and India (15%).

According to census data, between 1990 and 2000, Maine Community’s population experienced demographic shifts. During that ten year period, the non-white population increased over 100 percent. School data indicates dramatic changes in the Hispanic, Polish, and Russian populations. Most of this population shift occurred with immigrant families, explaining the number of households in our community in which multiple languages are spoken or where English is not the primary language.

The Maine Township area contains four main public school districts. Three are elementary and middle/junior high school districts, pre-kindergarten through eighth grade (Des Plaines Elementary School District 62, East Maine Elementary School District 63 and Elementary School District 64).

One is a high school district, Maine Township District 207, comprised of three high schools (Maine East, Maine South and Maine West) with students in grades nine through twelve.

Elementary District 62 is a K-8 public school district that includes most of Des Plaines and a portion of Elk Grove Village. In total, there are eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one K-8 community school in this district.

East Maine School District 63 is a K-8 public school district with six elementary schools (K-6) and one junior high school (7-8). District 63 encompasses portions of five different communities - unincorporated Des Plaines, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge, and Morton Grove. Each school is viewed as part of the specific community in which it is located.

Elementary School District 64 is a K-8 public school district that includes five elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), and one early education center. District 64 includes all of Park Ridge and a portion of Niles.

High School District 207 includes three high schools: Maine East, Maine South, and Maine West. The High School District pulls from Elementary School Districts 62, 63, and 64 and other outlying suburbs which include Harwood Heights and Norridge.

MCYAF’s target population is all students in grades 6-12 in Maine Township School Districts 62, 63, 64 and 207 and their families.
